1791-1867. English chemist and physicist. In
1821 he began experimenting with
electromagnetism, and ten years later
discovered the induction of electric currents
and made the first dynamo. He subsequently
found that a magnetic field will rotate the
plane of polarization of light. Faraday also
investigated electrolysis. In 1812 he began
researches into electricity, and made his
first electric battery. He became a
laboratory assistant to Sir Humphry Davy at
the Royal Institution 1813, and in 1833
succeeded him as professor of chemistry
there. He delivered highly popular lectures
at the Royal Institution, and published many
treatises on scientific subjects. Deeply
religious, he was a member of the
Sandemanians (a small Congregationalist
sect).
